FlickrSolver

NOTE: this is incomplete and the process of being written up. There will be errors, and it will change drastically over the coming week

Written in Python, and depends on JSON (javascript object notation) for retrieving the information from Flickr.

Create Account

To create an account that has access to annotate images, and write comments:

  1. Create account
  2. Join astrometry.net group
  3. Promote account within astrometry.net
  4. Run auth.py

Once your key is set up, you can start the cron job that simply runs flickr_blind.py every X hours.

Currently we have the account blind.solver posting comments. It's running on Christopher's box and should eventually be moved off to a more stable environment.

Details of Flickr Solver

  • get latest pictures submitted to group
  • while picture wasn't the most recent one solved, solve
  • try highest resolution possible, reducing resolution if highest resolution doesn't work.
  • grab results, parse into a comment, post
  • annotate image

Things I'd still like to do

  • add tags to the pictures
  • add notes to the picture done
  • post pictures showing what part of the sky is in the picture
  • improve the text parsing - maybe have a proper result pumped out instead of parsing the web-result.
